Search engine submission is the manner of submitting a website directly by a Webmaster to a search engine. This method is often seen as a way to promote a website but generally it is not necessary since the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN use crawlers, bots, and spiders that would eventually identify by themselves most web sites on the Internet. Primarily
there are two basic reasons to submit a website or web page to search engines, firstly, to add an entirely new web site as the site operators do not want to wait for a search engine to discover them. Secondly they would like the web page or web site to be updated in the respective search engines.
A webmaster normally uses two methods to submit their site to a search engine. They either submit just individual web pages at a time or they submit their entire site through a sitemap. Basically however, all that is required is to submit just the home page of a web site as this page allows most search engines to crawl the site as long as it is well designed. Most website owners want their site to be listed in popular search engines as normally web users start their search for a product or service there when they seek information on the Internet. Websites appearing on the first page of a search, are usually the top 10 and webmasters often desire that their sites appear in the top 10 in search engine, since searchers are not very likely to look over more than one page of search results.
In order to obtain good placement on search results in the various engines, websites must optimize their web pages. This depends on certain variables such as the keyword placement and density, the hierarchy structure of web pages employed in a web site in order to access the site and the number of web pages that are linked to a particular web page. The sitemap is generally used to create awareness in the search engine about a website and the pages on the site. The location of the Sitemap is denoted by a robots.txt file which helps search engines to locate the sitemaps. Nowadays the major search engines have the ability to automatically discover new web pages by crawling links from other sites. The exception to this rule occurs whenever a new site under a new domain name desires to be indexed.
As inbound links have not yet been established, search engines cannot discover the new site, this makes search engine submission a necessity. Without submitting to these search engines via search engine submission software, a website can miss millions of web traffic who might visit the website via the search engines. Another benefit from some search engine submission software is not only submission of the website to search engines, but also they add links to the website from their own link pages. This helps to increase the website’s ranking, since external links are considered to be one of the most important factor in a web site’s ranking.
