Honest Links versus SEO Links: How to Link for Humans and Not for SEO

The end game of any Los Angeles SEO company is to make sure your website gets high search engine rankings. What some SEOs forget is that they should be marketing more for humans and not for Googlebots.

Too often links are created strictly to please the Google crawlers and not for the human online presence that is more receptive to a website’s content.

“Linking for people” simply means that the person writing the content and plugging in keywords are thinking strictly about the users who will be reading it and how they will use the information. The SEO keywords are plugged into the article in a way that is natural and useful to the person reading it. In even simpler terms, it’s natural, honest linking used for the good of the reader.

On the other hand, links created strictly for SEO will often be inserted in places that are irrelevant to the user. The link inserted is usually bid upon solely to put up green flags for search engine bots. SEO links are usually created for self-promotion and has nothing to do with providing great content to human users. These links work to boost traffic in the short term, yet will work against the website over time, especially after Google got smart with their algorithm updates.

Being reminded about some link-building facts can get you on the right track to building more human links.

Most SEOs know that getting an inbound link from a massively popular website is a great way to get traffic to your website. A link from the Los Angeles Times website, for instance, will increase traffic to your SEO company Los Angeles website by leaps and bounds.

This fact is a moot point, however, if the content this inbound link leads to is of subpar quality or just isn’t useful to the people who visit your site.

Having great content on your landing page is instrumental to a successful link-building campaign. If your content is of little use to people, people will only visit your website for short periods and abandon it for something more worthwhile. When you have a good amount of people swarming your site for long periods, you can bet Google will notice and bump up your rankings.

  • Don’t sign up to link directories that have little or no traffic going through it. This is only a short term solution that will cause even bigger problems down the line.
  • Swapping links via link exchanges is an old technique that has since fallen out of favor thanks to the latest Google Penguin updates. This is a cheap way of garnering links and are easy to detect, especially if the links are obviously going in and out of the same place.
  • Whatever you do, don’t send low quality articles to low quality article directories. In fact, don’t generate low quality articles ever. There are a few article directories that are worth the time, but only because they have stringent guidelines for acceptable articles.

There is a clear demarcation between human linking and SEO linking, the former of which is clearly the most favorable and will garner the best traffic for your website.
